EPISODES
To date, the Cancering Show features three episodes (there will be a total of 12 for the first season):
Ep.1 - Who Is Dr. JYP? >>> Listen here
On this first episode, Dr. Mike Finan, a senior gynecologic oncologist and professor of interdisciplinary clinical oncology at USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute introduces you to the show's host, Dr. Jennifer Young Pierce, or "JYP" to many of her colleagues and friends. Dr. JYP is a GYN oncologist at the Mitchell Cancer Institute and also the program leader for the MCI Division of Cancer Control and Prevention. Dr. JYP shares her journey from medical school to the Mitchell Cancer Institute, what inspired her to become a doctor and oncologist, and what drives her today in cancer research and patient care.
Ep.2 - The Symptoms with Dr. Israel >>> Listen here
In most patients' cancer stories and journeys, cancer didn't start with the diagnosis. First, there are symptoms, pain, and probably a visit to the family doctor, Urgent Care or student health center before the diagnosis is made. In this episode, Dr. JYP and studio guest Dr. Robert Israel, an internal medicine physician in Mobile, Alabama, talk about common and uncommon cancer symptoms, early tests, hearing the diagnosis and learning how the trusted family doctor works with a patient's new team of cancer specialists and caregivers. Plus, they discuss the mental distress of a diagnosis, the healthy lifestyle, and how a patient can smoothly transition from treatment back to his or her primary care doctor to live fully in survivorship.
Ep. 3 - The Diagnosis with Dr. Butler >>> Listen here
In this episode, Dr. JYP consults with MCI oncologist and supportive care physician Dr. Thomas Butler about delivering and managing the emotional side of a cancer diagnosis, and how patients can still live their lives with that life-changing reality. Even an "incurable" diagnosis. Dr. Butler candidly shares his thoughts on talking with doctors, building trust, the importance of positivity and spirituality, and the interdisciplinary care processes that affect the cancer patient, family, and community.
